Peru - Day 5 Part II - Our First Look at Machu Picchu

It is a very bumpy 30 minute bus ride from Aguas Calientes up to Machu Picchu. There are occasional thrills as one bus meets another going the opposite direction in a place on the road where it is too narrow for both vehicles. In the photo, we are getting our entrance tickets from Victor.

As you go through the ticket booth and proceed down the walkway, you can start to get a glimpse of what is to come.

And then you are there..... This has always been Sigrid's dream trip. She got choked up and tears came to her eyes as she first saw the full glory of Machu Picchu. I am so glad we came. It is uncertain whether people will be allowed to visit in future years and the political climate in Peru is somewhat unsettled after the initial elections.

This look dangerous, but I never had the feeling that I was about to fall off a cliff while walking around.

The walkways are wide in most places.

The round building is the Temple of the Sun.

This is the very peak of Huayna Picchu, the mountain that overlooks the buildings of the city. People do hike up to the top if they are in good physical condition. It takes about 45 or so minutes one way. I imagine the view is breathtaking if you have any left.

We were warned to take mosquito repellent, but I never saw a mosquito while there. It could be that there were so many tourists that there was a shortage of mosquitoes.

I know that many of the photos look the same, but that happens when you are there. Every time you look another direction, you get amazed and take another photo. Then you realized that you just took the same photo a minute ago. More to come.
