Peru - Day 5 Part I - Train to Machu Picchu

Well, the train really doesn't go to Machu Picchu. We got on in Ollantaytambo and rode it to the end of the line in Aguas Calientes which is at the foot of the mountain that Machu Picchu sits on. It is a 90 minute ride on a very comfortable and scenic rail line. There is no road to Aguas Calientes so the train is the only option unless you want to kayak (not a good idea), take a four day hike, or rent a helicopter.

Snacks are served during the ride.

The river running through the Sacred Valley was brutal and beautiful at the same time.

Waterfalls and Inca ruins are all along the route.

Our destination, Aguas Calientes.

We had lunch and then headed for Machu Picchu. It rained the entire trip to Aguas Calientes, but then stopped as we arrived. Maybe the "Offering to the Earth" wishes were coming true.
