We got off to an early start on our driving trip with our German guests, the Schmid's, on August 26. The trip will be about 1,000 miles over eight days. We will travel through Tennessee and Arkansas as a part of a big loop in the Midwest.
Our plan was to drive to Hermann, MO so they can get another taste of the German heritage in the US.....the Werner brats from yesterday are still being digested. After Hermann, we will drive to St Charles to check out one of the early cities in Missouri.
Sigrid and Gisela checkout the grapes in Hermann.
Lars and mom, Gisela, on an old caboose.
Inside the Festhalle, it is decorated just as so many restaurants/hotels are in Germany.
Grape vines on the hillside at the Stone Hill Winery.
After a German style lunch in Hermann, we piled back into the van and headed to St Charles, MO to walk around the old town.
Lars, Gisela, and Georg Schmid in St Charles, MO.
A riverside park along the Mississippi River.
Gisela meets a cigar store wooden Indian.
Gisela meets Daniel Boone.
St Charles is a neat old city and we could have used more time there. We saw most of the shops but didn't get to any of the museums. We had dinner at the Ameristar Casino buffet which was next door to our hotel.
Tomorrow, we tour the Arch, Laclede's Landing, and then head to Salem, MO.
