As I mentioned in en earlier post, bad things have happened shortly after we visit a spot on vacation. About three weeks after touring the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio, it was struck by lightning. Damage was done to a finger, a hand , and to the head of the statue.
I borrowed a few photos of the statue for the post. This is what it looks like on a good day.
An amazing photo. You can see the lightning rod and wires all along the hands, arms, and head of the statue. They just weren't enough for the big storm that hit January 16, 2014.
Massive lightning.
Ouch.....there goes the finger.
Getting access to the statue requires climbing onto the base and then going up inside of the statue.
There are access doors in the arms and head of the statue.
The finger damage is clearly visible in the photo. The statue is made of concrete and soap stone with a steel inner structure.
This job is not for me.
The next post will be of Buenos Aires.
