Peru - Day 6 Part I - Aguas Calientes, Flowers, Birds

Most of the group returned to Machu Picchu but Sigrid and I decided to stay in town and look around. It had been raining all morning and we weren't anxious, no matter how fabulous Machu Picchu is, to climb around on wet slippery rocks and try to keep the cameras dry.

We are in a jungle environment as you can see from all the vegetation on the tiled roof.

We had a leisurely breakfast at the Inkaterra Hotel.

Here they are again......the same little people who were on the wall of our first hotel room in Lima.

Just outside our hotel, the river continues to roar.

Train tracks run on both sides of the Inkaterra Cafe. Sigrid loves trains so it is no problem.

We walked around Aguas Calientes a little and got caught in a torrential downpour. We hid under awnings until the rain slowed.

Back on the grounds of the hotel, I found a few nice flowers to photo.

We had signed up for a Nature Walk around the hotel grounds, but decided to just look around ourselves at our own pace. I found the locations where the staff had put bananas in the trees to lure the birds so I sat on a bench and waited with the telephoto lens ready.

There are four birds in this photo.

A lonesome hummingbird.

There were plenty of birds but not very many species. I was hoping for more colorful birds and a little better light, but sometimes you have to take what you can get.

Peru - Day 5 Part III - Aguas Calientes & Inkaterra Machu Picchu Hotel

Aguas Calientes is a small town of about 2,000 people located on the Vilcanota River and the Peru Rail line that runs to Cusco. The town is highly dependent on tourism....primarily Machu Picchu. There are hot mineral baths in town and some people come to take advantage of them. The town consists largely of restaurants and shops of all kinds.

The town is on both sides of a stream that feeds the river, so several pedestrian bridges connect the two sides of town.

This is the Cafe at the Inkaterra Hotel where we stayed. Like all the other places we stayed, they have great food.

Freddie after our Machu Picchu tour.

I thought I was done with steps for the day after we left Machu Picchu.....I was wrong.

Our room with French Doors leading out to a nice patio.

Not a bad place to relax.

The hotel and all its buildings are in a very rustical setting.

We know all of our neighbors......even in Peru.

The steam room..........not too busy in the jungle.

The lobby has lots of room to gather and talk about KU basketball.

Another top notch dinner at the Cafe.

Time to rest up for tomorrow.
